Description

PYOTR ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY: Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, from The Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a
Arranged for four bass clarinets and piccolo by Michael A. Grant

Although he mastered many musical forms in his lifetime, Tchaikovsky is perhaps principally remembered today for his contribution to the ballet genre. The Nutcracker is the third of his three ballet scores, and while it only received a lukewarm reception at its premiere in 1892 it has since gone on to attain enormous popularity, in part due to the success of the 20-minute orchestral suite extracted by the composer. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy in particular is enormously famous, and is (in its original form) notable for its use of the celeste, a keyboard instrument that produces sound by hitting a set of metal plates, producing an ethereal and unearthly sound.
